What is Search Engine Marketing?

Internet marketing is a very broad marketing area. One of the most popular internet marketing method used is the “Search Engine Marketing” in short it is known as SEM. SEM aims to market webpages and/or websites rather than products or services through the use of search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN and etc. SEM is a great way to start to increase online sales but is less attractve for SMEs that want to stimulate regular sales instead of online sales.

SEM can be divided into 2 elements

  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Search Engine Advertising (SEA)

The act, process, strategies, techniques and tactics of increasing the numbers of visitors to a webpage/website by making sure that the site appears high on the list of the search results returned by a search engine such as Google, Yahoo, MSN..It requires making small modifications to parts of the website in order for the website to appear on top of the search engine list.(more..)

Search Engine Advertising (SEA)

The act, process, strategies, techniques, method and tactics of placing online advertisements on Web pages that show results from search engine queries. This ads are triggered by active search. Some of the most common SEA methods are :

1. Keyword based contextual based banner advertising. Some search engines sell keywords to advertisers such as Google.
2. Image/graphic banner advertising. It can be marketed through

  • Social Media
  • Email/Newsletter
  • Publisher Website
  • Other forms of web marketing & communication methods

Banner ad is pretty effective method to get more visitors to visit your website and boost the ranking on the search engine.
